Mammoth Springs

On a trip to Arkansas last month,

I stopped at Mammoth Springs, where, in a park beside the highway,

9 million gallons of water flow hourly,

making it the second largest spring in the Ozark Mountains.

With all of that motion,

it's still possible to find an undisturbed place

where bird songs blend with the ripple of waterfalls

and downstream, trees reflect in quiet waters.

I paused on the way back at Tecumseh, Missouri,

at the headwaters of Lake Norfork.

The first leaves were unfurling on the trees,

and under a bright overcast sky,

the water below mirrored their yellow-green colors.

There is another spring,

more powerful than any on this earth,

a spring to which everyone is invited:

"I am the Alpha and the Omega,

the Beginning and the End.

To him who is thirsty

I will give to drink without cost

from the spring of the water of life."
