Morning Glory

Sunrise over Bull Shoals Lake

Being married to a real estate broker has it's perks, and one of them is getting to see some really nice property. I often go along with Don to shoot pictures for his business, and this morning was among the best. This was shot from the deck of a beautiful home overlooking Bull Shoals Lake.

Food and Shelter

After some promising signs of spring, winter is back in full force.  Sleet, like tiny frozen styrofoam balls, fell all day Sunday and piled up, covering the ground.  By yesterday morning, it was a solid mass of ice, laying under the cushion of snow that fell overnight.

In the wee hours of the morning, Don fired up the wood furnace, and by the time I got up, it was already cozy inside.  Church was cancelled on account of the weather, and so we busied ourselves at home.

Outdoors, the birds were very active, searching for food to keep themselves warm.  Cedar waxwings have been here for a few days.  They fly with the pinpoint precision of the Blue Angels, as if some inner radar tells all of them the exact spot in the air at which they must pivot.  They swirl in the sky in perfect sync, praising the One who gave them flight.

Yesterday they gathered on a tree limb, facing the wind, displaying their red wing tips and the yellow on the end of their tails.  As their name indicates, they  appear to have dipped their feathers in bright hot wax before they started their day.  In a moment, like falling leaves, they cascaded down to the birdbath and drank their fill, thanking the One who provides for them.

On a branch outside our window, one particularly fluffed up bird shivered against the cold, and periodically, opened his mouth.  He seemed to be catching the sleet, and appeared to be somewhat surprised by the result.

He glanced my way, as if to say, "How cool was that?"

As the daylight disappears, they retreat to their quarters, often in the cedars,
where they wait for the light of a new day, entrusting themselves to the One who shelters them.

You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.
Revelation 4:11

He cares for those who trust in Him.

Sky Dragons and a Million Dollar Bridge

When the Theodosia Bridge was completed in 1952, it was called "The Million Dollar Bridge". A few years ago, the government mandated that the old paint be removed and replaced with one that was more environmentally friendly, and the new paint job cost more than it did to build the bridge.  The material didn't hold up as well as the original, and it's slated to be painted again soon.  They're estimating four million this time.

Aside from all of that, it certainly looked like a Four Million Dollar bridge this morning,
enveloped in sun-lit fog.
The breeze was constantly changing the formation of the fog,
swirling it to form hawks and dragons...

before the sun started to burn its way through, casting its gold on the water.

A window in the fog revealed distant hilltops.

Nearby, a fisherman had parked his boat and trailer, and was out on the chilly water,
but in this particular spot, it was only God and me
and a lone gull, soaring over the bridge.

It wasn't a bad way to start the day.

Fog on the Theodosia Bridge

I headed home through the fog, and contrary to appearances,
the other end of the bridge was still in place.

Priceless.

Joy in the Morning

In the morning, O Lord,
You hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before You
and wait in expectation.

Psalm 5:3

   In Jesus Christ our Lord...
and through faith in Him
we may approach God
with freedom and confidence.

Ephesians 3:11, 12

Come to me,
all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.

Monday's Sunrise

At 7:14 AM, the sky looked promising...

But by 7:16 AM, it looked like someone had turned the lights out.

And back on at 7:23 AM.

Yesterday's Sunrise

Ominous clouds at sunrise cleared quickly,
giving way to blue sky and a record-breaking 92 degrees.
What happened to spring?

Morning Hills

The sun came shimmering up through the trees on the distant horizon this morning,
white against a warm peach sky.
Beyond our house, east toward the sunrise, is a valley stretching up to distant hills,
and though the landscape is constant, the view is always changing.
Earlier this week, the trees were covered with frost, glistening with iridescent diamonds.

Sometimes the trees stand out in stark relief, outlined by fog.

At other times, the sky takes center stage, displaying its brilliant colors.

We've watched wave after wave of blackbirds fill the sky in swift migration,
or a lone vulture soar on the breeze.
A procession of seasons washes over the hills.
It lifts our thoughts to God, fills our eyes with wonder, and our hearts with gratitude.

Many, O Lord my God,
are the wonders You have done.
The things You planned for us
no on can recount to You;
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to declare.
Psalm 40:5
